Summer Sunset

heat
burning my face
my back

radiating

brown, gold
bright blue

feeling the sand
under my toes

waves crashing

heart
beat
jump
stop.

you're doing it wrong

hair across my face
warm wind embrace

red
deep red
stop calling my name
black

I wrote this free verse poem thinking of when I watched the sunset on the beach in Maui. It is a great summer memory of mine. I included a lot of colors in my poem because that is a lot of what I remember and it gives a good picture across to the readers. The colors gold and brown would be the sand; the color bright blue would be the sea and the sky; the red and deep red would be the sunset and black, the night sky.  This ties is with my theme of seasons because it is about the season of summer.

Winter Wonderland a Carol

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,

In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say: Are you married?

We'll say: No man,

But you can do the job

When you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,

As we dream by the fire

To face unafraid,

The plans that we've made,

Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman

And pretend that he's a circus clown

We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman

Until the other kids knock him down

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

I chose this song because it is one of my favorite Christmas carols and it describes winter beautifully. I love the simple, bright and festive lyrics. I also like how the song looks just as good as a poem too. This fit well into my theme of seasons as it is talking about winter.

Snowman

There once was a snowman in may
Who was afraid he would melt away
Little did he know
He was not made of snow
But rather of painted white clay

I wrote this limerick for the month may. I had a hard time deciding to use it for the month of may or a winter month, because it talks about a snowman. I really like limericks because they are cute and funny, they have a simple rhyme scheme but I found it a little more difficult to make it flow. This poem fits in with my theme of seasons because it is about a snowman in may, which is the season of spring.

Gathering Leaves by Robert Frost

Spades take up leaves
No better than spoons,
And bags full of leaves
Are light as balloons.

I make a great noise
Of rustling all day
Like rabbit and deer
Running away.

But the mountains I raise
Elude my embrace,
Flowing over my arms
And into my face.

I may load and unload
Again and again
Till I fill the whole shed,
And what have I then?

Next to nothing for weight,
And since they grew duller
From contact with earth,
Next to nothing for color.

Next to nothing for use.
But a crop is a crop,
And who's to say where
The harvest shall stop?

I picked this poem because I really like Robert Frost and I also like this poem a lot. It ties in with my theme of seasons because gathering leaves represents autumn for me. Raking leaves is something I always do in autumn. I think this poem captures this chore in a light and fun way, especially when Frost jokes about how there is really now use for the bags of leaves after gathering them up.

Summer Is

Summer is
tan skin
short skits
dirty feet
walking
biking
running
to warm sands
cool waters

Summer is
old friends
new friends
distant family
talking
shouting
laughing
at coffee shops
busy streets

I wrote this free verse poem for a summer month and it ties in with my theme of seasons because it is my most favorite, memorable things about summer. I only describe two scenes in this poem but I feel like they are two very typical summer scenes that everyone one dreams about when they think about summer. Going to the beach, and hanging out with friends and family. I used a lot of verbs in this poem so you could really picture the scene.

Poetic Devices
imagery - tan skin ect.
repetition - friends

Autumn by Percy Bysshe Shelley

The warm sun is failing, the bleak wind is wailing,
The bare boughs are sighing, the pale flowers are dying,
And the Year
On the earth her death-bed, in a shroud of leaves dead,
Is lying.
Come, Months, come away,
From November to May,
In your saddest array;
Follow the bier
Of the dead cold Year,
And like dim shadows watch by her sepulchre.

The chill rain is falling, the nipped worm is crawling,
The rivers are swelling, the thunder is knelling
For the Year;
The blithe swallows are flown, and the lizards each gone
To his dwelling;
Come, Months, come away;
Put on white, black, and gray;
Let your light sisters play --
Ye, follow the bier
Of the dead cold Year,
And make her grave green with tear on tear.

I picked this rhyming triplet poem because I like how Shelley describes autumn. Its dark and gloomy and filled with lots of things dying. It actually has a different take on autumn than I have because I love autumn. I love colours of autumn like the reds and oranges that the trees turn, and the pale grays of the sky. I finding autumn a refreshing season and was surprised to see it described in this way, as the "saddest array". This poem is a good addition to my theme.

Rain a Nursery Rhyme

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day;
Little Johnny wants to play.

I picked this poem because I used to sing it a lot when I was younger and it is very familiar to me. It also fits into my theme of seasons. The rain reminds me of spring and how it rains a lot but it is still warm enough for the kids to go out and play but they can't. There are many different versions of this rhyme but I picked the most familiar and know version for my blog.

Poetic Devices
repetition - rain, rain
rhyme scheme - aaa
assonance - again another

Untitled Poem by Todd-Earl Rhodes

utter aloneness
         snowflake on gnome’s nose

__________________________________________________________________________

I picked this poem because when I read it I thought it was the cutest poem ever. Luckily it fit with my theme of seasons and I could add it to my blog. The snow flake makes the poem, for me, fall into the season of winter. I was surprised to find that this poem is a modern haiku, even though it only has two lines.  I love the image that you get when you read this poem.

Summer Sun by Robert Louis Stevenson

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

The dusty attic spider-clad
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.

Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy's inmost nook.

Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.

I picked this poem because I think it plays in very well with my theme of seasons. This poem mostly portrays to the season of summer. I like how the author conveys the sun almost like a person going around and shedding light on different things like pants and children. There is a lot of personification in this poem.

Springtime

Summer is just around the bend
Puddles pool on every sidewalk
Rainy mist hits your face
It's sunny and bright but
Never warm enough to not wear a jacket
Growing plants are blossoming
The sweet smell fills the air
Intense blue skies match the fresh green grass and pink trees
Much of the month is spent with grey skies though
Each day get a little warmer, getting ready for summer

This is an acrostic poem I wrote for one of the spring months. This acrostic poem usually has and idea per letter but sometimes one idea over laps into two letter. The main idea in this poem is mostly how spring is warming up for summer which is just around the bend. My favorite color combinations are found in spring time and that is the pink of the blossoms, the green of the grass and the blue of the sky. I like these colors so much I painted my room like that. This poem ties in with my theme of seasons because it is about the season of spring.

Poetic Devices
alliteration - puddles pool, green grass, sweet smell
assonance - mist hits
imagery - fresh green grass and pink trees
